Popsicles

Fun Fact

With summer right around the corner, who’s craving popsicles? I know I am! Popsicles were actually invented by accident by an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson in 1905! Frank made himself a popular drink at the time: he stirred a flavoured soda powder into his water but forgot it on the front porch overnight, stir stick and all!

That night, the temperature in San Francisco hit a record low, and Frank’s forgotten soda froze overnight. In the morning, he came across it and was able to pull it out of the glass. He used the stir stick as a handle and enjoyed the first popsicle!

He combined his own name and the word icicle to come up with the name Epsicle and started to sell his new invention.

Almost 20 years later, in 1924, Frank expanded his sales and applied for a patent. The tradition of enjoying Epsicles in the summer continued and was passed on to his children, who urged their father to change the name of his invention to the nickname they had given it: Pop’s Sicle. Pop’s Sicle, over time, became Popsicle, the icy, summer treat we all know and love today! What’s your favorite flavor?
