Nachos
Fun Fact
A staple at any sporting event and an overall delicious meal, Nachos were invented in Northern Mexico by accident!
In 1943, a group of military wives from Eagle Pass, Texas walked into a restaurant in the neighbouring border town of Piedras Negras. They were hungry and went to a restaurant called Club Victoria where Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya was the maitre d. His job was to welcome guests however when the women came to the restaurant, the cook was unavailable.
Thinking on his feet, Anaya rushed into the kitchen and put together a dish with what he could find. The end result? Tortilla chips, topped with grated cheese and jalapenos. He brought the dish out to the guests and presented them with “Nacho’s Especiales” - essentially Nacho’s Special. Nacho was Anaya’s nickname and he had named the dish after himself.
The guests were extremely satisfied with the dish and it gained popularity while also losing the “especiales” at the end of its name to become the nachos we know and love today!
