Diffusion with Skittles

Wit-Bit

In today’s post, I will be explaining how to do a diffusion experiment with skittles!!

For the experiment, all you need are skittles and warm water!

First, line up the skittles along the border of a plate. Be sure to have at least 3 of the same color next to each other, and alternate colors to create a cool design.

Then, get some warm water and carefully pour it into the middle of

the plate. Make sure that you pour enough so the skittles are covered by water. After a while, you will start to see the color from the skittles move towards the middle of the plate. As you watch, you will see that the colors create a cool design!

So… why does this happen?
This occurred due to diffusion!

Diffusion is the movement of a substance from high concentration to low concentration. In this case, the substance is the food coloring on the skittles. When the warm water was added, the food coloring moved from the skittles (the high concentration) to the water (the low concentration). Thus, we were able to visually see diffusion occur!

Through this experiment, we got to learn how diffusion works in a cool way! Check us out on TikTok and Instagram for more content, and check out our other blog posts posted on stemchef.com for more fun food based experiments!
